The Alaska Highway

Jerry loves Tim Horton's Donuts!! (2)

See that smile on my face?  I am enjoying a Tim Horton’s apple fritter! A highlight of Canada as well as the Alaska Highway is Tim Horton’s.

The Alaska Highway (ALCAN) was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous U.S. to Alaska through Canada. It begins in Dawson Creek, British Columbia and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942, it was 1422 miles long. If you are so inclined to want to read about the route, there is a great web site that tells you about every mile: http://www.bellsalaska.com/myalaska/alaska_highway.html

We detoured off the main route at Whitehorse in the Yukon, where we took the Klondike Highway to Dawson City and then the Top of the World Highway and the Taylor Highway back to Route 2/Alaska Highway, near Tok, Alaska. This loop is about 500 miles, 100 miles longer than staying on the ALCAN. But with the cheap gas prices, what the heck…Winking smile We will catch the ALCAN we missed on the way back south.

Overall the highway conditions were very good. We believe many of the “horror stories” about the roads to Alaska originated years back before many of the current highway improvements. The legend lives on…..  There are the occasional breaks in the pavement and frost heaves but these are well marked with orange warning flags so you can slow down. Even the Top of the World Highway was acceptable. It was very dusty and as RV’s attract dust we had a major cleaning when we got back on pavement at Tok. We also picked up our mail at Tok.

Here are just a few photos from beginning to end:
